Latest News of the Laugarvegur Ultra Marathon

It is widely known that the eruption in Eyjafjallajökull is considered to be over. The organizing committee for the run has been hoping that the event would be staged according to schedule, if it will be possible to drive along the road to Þórsmörk with passengers and supplies. The road has now been repaired and bus trips will be permitted under inspection.

These were good news for a while. But a road and a volcanic ash are two different things. The volcanic ash, as was internationally well known, traveled through the stratosphere all the way to Europe and wider. All through May the guards at Húsadalur at Þórsmörk could not detect any ash but that was too good to be true. The direction of the wind changed to northerly ash rained over Húsadalur and vicinity. The ash covers the whole of the area of the Laugavegur run from Landmannalaugar to Þórsmörk.

We have contacted some specialists who stated that with a good precipitation the ash could disappear underground. We will keep our fingers crossed for a while and will issue a new statement next week. For the time being the participants of the run are asked to perform the rain dance.

Laugavegur Ultra Marathon will not be canceled

Runners registered for the LAUGAVEGUR ULTRA MARATHON are probably now wondering if the volcanic eruption in Eyjafjallajokull glacier will have any effect on the race this summer. The race is almost 2 months from now and we have no plans to cancel the race. Today we are confident that this will be over soon but if not we will have plan B ready. Further information about how this will develop will be published here on the website.

Although the volcano is spreading ash around the world day-to-day life in Iceland is just as usual. The volcanic eruption in Eyjafjallajökull glacier on the south coast of Iceland has made an impact in a specified area, in other parts of the country Icelanders' daily life is proceeding quite normally.
