The 22nd Laugavegur Ultra Marathon will take place today on Saturday, July 14th. 553 runners are at the start list, 204 female, and 349 male participants. This is a new participation record. The number of Icelandic participants is 294 and 259 from other countries. Most of the international guests are coming from the USA, 63 runners, second most from the UK, 31 runners, and third most from France, 25 runners.
Laugavegur is located in the southern highlands of Iceland and connects the nature reserves Landmannalaugar and Thorsmork. Due to its location, Laugavegur is serviced for only a few weeks a year. For many runners, the Laugavegur Ultra Marathon is the most enjoyable race in Iceland. The course takes runners through areas of outstanding natural beauty at the same time as being a challenging course. Hikers normally cover this distance in four days but the female record is 5 hours and the male record is 3 hours 59 minutes.
Hopefully, it will be possible to post the split times and results live here on the web, but that depends on the signal on race day that can be very variable on the trail. News about the first finishers will be posted on Facebook as soon as possible. Confirmed results will be posted here at marathon.is around 7 pm.
The Weather Watch has sent us a new weather forecast for the Laugavegur trail tomorrow. The forecast looks better today with some expected sun by Emstrur and the finish line. Fog, rain, and headwind are still expected at the highest peak, Hrafntinnusker. Therefore we ask you please look for the orange flags in the snow so you don´t get lost in the fog. Click here to see the weather forecast on a map.
According to the trail wardens and the hikers, the status of the trail is good. The snow is retreating but is still on the trail for about 2-3 km before and after Hrafntinnusker. On some parts, you should expect to go through some wet and slushy snow.
The race bus
We want to remind you that the race bus leaves from the Ice skating rink (Skautahöllin) in Laugardalur at 4:30 am. Those who have ordered a seat in the bus from Selfoss will have to be at the N1 gas station at 5:00 and those who will jump in at Hrauneyjar should be ready at 7:00. It is very important that you show up in time because the bus cannot wait for anyone. You can use the toilets at the Ice skating rink from 4:15-4:25. Next change to use the toilet will be in Hrauneyjar around two hours later.
